Trump Cancels WHO Funding Over China Claims

Over a Presidency which has been headlined by controversy and scandal, Trump has once again thrust himself into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Just a couple of months after his impeachment acquittal, Trump has made headlines this week firstly for a heated televised press conference in which he openly attacked and insulted members of the media and, secondly, for following through on earlier threats and revoking funding for the World Health Organisation.

Trump Claims WHO/China Cover Up

Trump had become enraged with the Who over its criticisms of how the US administration handled the outbreak there. However, Trump countered this scrutiny by accusing the WHO of being involved in a cover up with China. Trump claims that the WHO supported and promoted China’s “disinformation” regarding the outbreak of the virus which exacerbated the global situation. Trump said that “The WHO failed in this basic duty and must be held accountable.”

US Death Toll Highest in World

The death toll in the US is increasing at the fastest pace globally. On Tuesday, over 2,200 people died from the coronavirus, marking the single largest one-day death toll during this outbreak. Such figures raise serious concerns over Trump’s statement that America will be “open for business” sooner than people think.

The question of when lock-down orders will be lifted in the US was at the source of Trump’s first controversy of the week. At a press conference earlier in the week, Trump clashed with reporters over his claims that the ultimate decision as to when lock-downs are lifted resides with Trump personally and not with individual state leaders.

Trump Attacks Media

During the press conference, Trump came under heavy criticism from reporters over his initial handling of the outbreak with press agents there accusing Trump of failing to act fast enough and wasting time which cost thousands of lives. Trump, however, responded in typical fashion saying that the US government did “a lot” during this time and ultimately berating the reporter in question, whom he labelled a “fake” and “disgraceful”.

Potential US Elections Impact For Trump

As the US continues to lead the way as the worst affected country (over 26,000 deaths to Italy’s 21,000), Trump has come under increasing criticism for failure to impose lock-downs fast enough and to begin testing fast enough. With the US elections due in November, however, Trump has been quick and clear to rise to his own defence and as usual has found an enemy to pin the blame on; this time, the World Health Organisation.

COVID-19 Death Toll Vs USD

The chart below shows how the US death toll is progressing and also, the simultaneous moves we are seeing in the US Dollar. The Dollar Index has started to reverse over the last week as the cumulative weight of the Fed’s easing actions begins to bear down on USD sentiment. The Fed has now cut rates to just above zero along with launching unlimited QE and a new $2.3 trillion corporate and municipal loans program. The big question now is whether we will see any further action?
